Department of Civil Engineering

Preface

Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering which deals with all works related to civil people. This is also known as Mother of all branches of engineering. The civil engineering profession consists of work with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical built environment such as buildings, roads, bridges, dams, canals etc.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 2013 at North Western University, Khulna. It started its journey through its undergraduate program in Civil Engineering.

This department has been offering undergraduate programs for both the students who have completed H.S.C/equivalent and Diploma in Engineering degree. For H.S.C/equivalent students, the bachelor degree is being offered with a duration of 4 years and Diploma intake students are offered with a duration of 3 years and 6 months. Both the H.S.C and Diploma intake undergraduate degree programs are spread over eight terms with two terms per academic year. In the case of Diploma intake undergraduate program, one term is wavered. The syllabus of this term is included with that subjects which are studied in 4 Year Diploma program.

There are now Eight (08) full-time faculty members. In addition, five (05) faculty members are on leave for higher studies in Australia, USA and Canada. Besides, there are several part-time faculty members from distinguished universities (KUET) and organizations. The department has been able to establish 06 laboratories named – 1. Engineering Materials Laboratory 2. Surveying Laboratory 3. Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory 4. Transportation Engineering Laboratory 5. Environmental Engineering Laboratory & 6. Structural Engineering Laboratory.

The main aim and objective of this department is to offer a program covering all important branches and disciplines of Civil Engineering. The department covers a wide range of course curriculum and has well-equipped laboratory facilities. The B.Sc. degree offered by the Department of Civil Engineering at NWU has been officially recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Since the commencement of the Civil Engineering Department, more than thirty (30) batches have graduated with Bachelor's Degree. A number of Graduates of this department are pursuing higher studies in Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) as well as in different reputed institutions around the world. Some of them are working in reputed consultation and construction firms of the country. Several graduates have already obtained M.Sc. degrees from universities of different countries and are working abroad.

Recently, the department has undertaken an initiative to provide education to our students through the Outcome-Based-Education (OBE) method. In this perspective, faculty members have been taking training on OBE to provide effective lectures in the classroom and help making the country proud producing quality Civil Engineers in national and international arena.

The Department is actively involved in the activities of the national and international engineering professional bodies. Apart from providing the academic programs, the department is planning to offer materials testing and consultation services by using its laboratories equipped with highly sophisticated and modern equipment and through its highly qualified and experienced faculty members. Comprehensive training on computer aided design, drawing and project management through Centre for Extension Service of the University is also included in its planning program. The Department arranges field visits, study tours, industrial tours, seminars, and programs as part of students' co-curricular activities. Different events like Job Fair, inter-university student competition programs, sport tournaments etc. are regularly organized as part of students' extra-curricular activities.
